As third party apps could come with adware, is there a way for saving videos from sites like YouTube?

Saturday, June 06, 2009

There are several tools for downloading web videos from sites like YouTube, Google Video, etc. But, usually many of these third party programs come with Adware. If you are looking for an alternative way, here is how. You can save videos from most of the video sites without using any software.

First of all go to your proffered video site and play a video (play it from beginning to end). After it has been finished close your browser and go to the following location (Windows XP).

Mozilla Firefox: C: \Document and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\ Mozilla\ Firefox\ Profiles\ default\Cache.

Google Chrome: C:\Document and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User data\Default\Cache.

Internet Explorer: C:\Document and Settings\User\Local Settings\ Temporary Internet files. Right click on a blank space, select view/details and arrange the icon by their size.

Now look for the largest files and also check the date on which they are created. Copy and paste this file to another location and rename the file with the .flv extension. Now you can play them using an appropriate player.

Note that you will need to show hidden files and folders. To do this open ‘My computer - tools – Folder Options – View - ‘Show hidden files and folders’. Firefox users should deselect ‘Always clear my private data when I close Firefox’ from Tools – Options – Privacy.

We can also use VideoCacheView which is the simplest way to Save downloaded video files from Web browser cache.

Or better use a free non-intrusive Firefox video downloader like this one :
