Fix for Unable to Change Lock Screen Background and User Account Picture In Windows 8

Usually it is easy to customize the Start Screen background, Lock Screen background and Account picture in Windows 8. However, for some reasons, sometimes you cannot change either the Lock Screen Background image or the account picture in Windows 8. Recently I came across such a situation and after a few research, I found it was due to a missing registry key. The registry key can be deleted by third-party apps or by yourself. Here is how to fix that issue.

You can customize Windows 8 Lock screen background, Start Screen background, and Account picture by going to personalize option. Just click “Change PC Settings” option and click “Personalise” option (Charms bar – Settings - Change PC Settings – Personalize)to change them.

However, if you can’t change anything, then follow the simple trick given below. As we make changes in registry, do take extra care while doing this.

 1. Open registry editor (type regedit from the start screen and open registry editor) and navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE – SOFTWARE – Microsoft – Windows –CurrentVersion – Explorer – Desktop – NameSpace.

 2. Locate the key {B4FB3F98-C1EA-428d-A78A-D1F5659CBA93} under NameSpace key.

3. If the key is not present, create a new key under NameSpace. For that, right-click on NameSpace and select “New” – “Key” option.

Name the key to {B4FB3F98-C1EA-428d-A78A-D1F5659CBA93} Now, in the right pane of window, change the value to (Default) for the Other Users.

 4. If the key is present, click on it and in the right pane of the Window make sure the value (Default) to be set to Other Users. That’s it.

Disable automatic Meta refresh/redirect of websites in browser for security reasons[how to]

Generally speaking, Meta refresh is a method used by some websites to instruct a web browser to automatically refresh/redirect the current web page after a given time interval. You can see this type of refresh/redirect especially in media sites. This is some times annoying or can be used for malicious purposes by redirecting you to a malicious site. If you don’t like this feature, you can disable this in your browser. Here is how to disable this in Internet Explore/Chrome, Firefox and Opera. Internet Explorer: Go to Tools - Internet options - Security tab - Custom Level button - Miscellaneous category - set "Allow Meta refresh" to Disable. Firefox: Go to Tools - Options - Advanced - General - Accessibility and tick the option next to ‘Warn me when web sites try to redirect or reload the page’. Alternatively you can use extension RefreshBlocker . Opera: Go to Preferences - Advanced - Network and uncheck "Enable automatic redirection".
