The Opera team has introduced WebAI, a local AI feature that runs directly on your browser. WebAI doesn't require a separate app installation, and it keeps your data private by processing everything locally rather than sending it to a cloud server.

WebAI is available starting with Opera version 139 or later. This on-device functionality allows both websites and extensions to use built-in AI to help you get things done.

WebAI is not turned on by default, so you'll need to activate and install it manually. Once it's set up, you can access it through a new icon in the Opera sidebar.

How to Enable WebAI in Opera Browser

1. Open Opera and go to Settings by clicking the Opera Menu button or pressing Alt+P.

2. Select the Opera AI tab from the left sidebar, then scroll down to the WebAI API section in the main pane.

3. Locate the Enable WebAI API toggle and switch it on.

4. Wait a few minutes while the browser downloads and installs the necessary AI model data.

5. Click the WebAI button in the Opera sidebar, then click the "Experience WebAI now" drop-down button.

6. Install one of the example extensions, and open it from your extensions menu.

How to Turn Off WebAI

If you decide to turn off WebAI later, click the Uninstall button under Management Options. This removes the inference engine data and frees up your disk space.

System Requirements

WebAI is an early preview available on 64-bit Windows PCs (Intel or AMD) and Macs with Apple silicon. It isn't available on Intel-based Macs, Linux, or Windows on Arm (source).

Final Thought

WebAI gives you on-device AI in Opera without a separate app or a cloud round trip, so your data stays on your device. Setup takes only a few minutes, but check your hardware first, since it works only on 64-bit Windows PCs and Apple silicon Macs. If you're on another platform, keep an eye on future releases.
