There are a variety of software available for painting and image editing works loaded with a bouquet of features and many of which are actually inappropriate for beginners and home users. Here is a little, free painting and image editing program that every one can give try.

HeliosPaint is a free, simple paint program for Windows, Mac, Linux and UNIX operating systems. This little program (below 1Mb for Windows) can be used for creating, editing and resizing images.

HeliosPaint includes most of the tools necessary for creating or editing an image such as sizeable brushes, pencil for editing pixels, shape tools, Scissors, lasso and wand for selecting and moving image segments, HSB/RGB/contrast/gamma adjustment of image, image filters, etc.

Some tools provide excellent performance like a commercial application, for instance, image filtering tools and color transparency adjustment.
