F-Secure Easy Clean- A free tool for cleaning common viruses and worms

F-Secure Easy Clean is a portable and easy-to-use tool for removing the most common viruses, worms and other malware from your computer. Designed to clean specific malware effectively from a PC, F-Secure Easy Clean scans your Windows XP and Vista for infections and removes any that it finds. The scan result displays malware that was detected and action that was performed on it.

Download the tool from www.f-secure.com and run it (No installation required). It will do a quick check for rootkit symptoms and proceed with scanning and removing infections.

You may want to disable your anti-virus program before running F-Secure Easy Clean, because they may block access to some files, so F-Secure Easy Clean cannot scan or clean them. Turn on your anti-virus program after finishing the scan.

Remember that it is not a full antivirus product. It does not remove all the known malware; it focuses just to the most common viruses, worms and other types of malware in the wild.

Disable automatic Meta refresh/redirect of websites in browser for security reasons[how to]

Generally speaking, Meta refresh is a method used by some websites to instruct a web browser to automatically refresh/redirect the current web page after a given time interval. You can see this type of refresh/redirect especially in media sites. This is some times annoying or can be used for malicious purposes by redirecting you to a malicious site. If you don’t like this feature, you can disable this in your browser. Here is how to disable this in Internet Explore/Chrome, Firefox and Opera. Internet Explorer: Go to Tools - Internet options - Security tab - Custom Level button - Miscellaneous category - set "Allow Meta refresh" to Disable. Firefox: Go to Tools - Options - Advanced - General - Accessibility and tick the option next to ‘Warn me when web sites try to redirect or reload the page’. Alternatively you can use extension RefreshBlocker . Opera: Go to Preferences - Advanced - Network and uncheck "Enable automatic redirection".
