IObit StartMenu8: Start Menu Replacement for Windows 8

As you known by all, in Windows 8 the Start Screen replaces the start button in earlier versions of Windows and is the starting point for everything you do in Windows 8. However, users who aren’t comfortable with the new start screen, there are many thirty party software tools like Classic Shell to bring the Windows 7 like start menu back to Windows 8. The latest example is StartMenu8 from iObit.
StartMenu8 (currently beta and free) is a perfect solution for users who still love the Windows Start Menu and aren’t comfortable with the new Metro start screen in Windows 8. Like in Windows 7, you can get quicker access to programs, documents and files, control panel and settings by installing StartMenu8.


Though the interface of StartMenu8 isn’t clean and crisp as Windows 7 start menu, it performance isn’t bad. You can quickly access programs and files as you usually do with your Windows 7.

Moreover, StartMenu8 not only brings back the convenient Start Menu to Windows 8, but it also allows you to bypass the Metro screen on start of Windows 8 and boot to desktop directly. You can enable or disable this feature by right clicking the start button.

Also, you can easily switch between Metro and desktop Interface by pressing and holding the Windows key, depending on your preference.

    I knew it would be just a matter of time before these kinds of products started being released.

    Sadly, I've always had mixed emotions about IObit, as a company (for ethical and other reasons), so I'm hoping others come out with similar products.

    That said, who knows: Maybe this one is fine.

    Classic Shell is the most implementation. Fast, high performance, responsive, consumes very little memory, extremely customizable, free and open source.

    I have the Release Preview of Windows 8 and I have to admit that I do miss the Start Button on my Desktop. Having said that, I really enjoy the 'Metro' (I know!) interface so it's good that there are options out there to bring it back but with this one also the ability to still have either Desktop or 'Metro' on Start Up. Thanks for the Review :-)

Disable automatic Meta refresh/redirect of websites in browser for security reasons[how to]

Generally speaking, Meta refresh is a method used by some websites to instruct a web browser to automatically refresh/redirect the current web page after a given time interval. You can see this type of refresh/redirect especially in media sites. This is some times annoying or can be used for malicious purposes by redirecting you to a malicious site. If you don’t like this feature, you can disable this in your browser. Here is how to disable this in Internet Explore/Chrome, Firefox and Opera. Internet Explorer: Go to Tools - Internet options - Security tab - Custom Level button - Miscellaneous category - set "Allow Meta refresh" to Disable. Firefox: Go to Tools - Options - Advanced - General - Accessibility and tick the option next to ‘Warn me when web sites try to redirect or reload the page’. Alternatively you can use extension RefreshBlocker . Opera: Go to Preferences - Advanced - Network and uncheck "Enable automatic redirection".
