Microsoft now lets you set the Windows 11 taskbar to a smaller size, and even move it to the top, left, or right side of the screen if you prefer. It’s especially useful on smaller laptop screens, where saving space can make the desktop feel less crowded and help you work more comfortably.

The feature is now available in Windows 11 through September 2026’s Patch Tuesday update. If you want to make your taskbar smaller and more compact, or move it to any side of the screen, just follow this guide.

How to Enable Small Taskbar in Windows 11

1. To change your taskbar size in Windows 11, right-click any empty space on the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.

2. Alternatively, press Win + I shortcut to open the Settings app and navigating to Personalization, then Taskbar.

3. Next click the Taskbar behaviors drop-down arrow to expand the menu.

4. Look for the Taskbar size option. From the drop-down list, select Small to instantly switch to a more compact look.

5. If you ever want to go back to the original size, simply change the setting back to Default.

Important: You can only make the taskbar smaller when it’s at the top or bottom of the screen. If it’s on the left or right, “Small” only makes the icons smaller.
