Convert Stereo MP3 to MP3 Surround sound

Here is a simple application for converting ordinary stereo MP3 sound to MP3 Surround sound. Fraunhofer IIS introduces MP3SX (MP3 Stereo eXtended), a new MP3 Surround flavor that offers the possibility to upgrade two-channel content into the 5.1 MP3 Surround format. It guarantees playback with a stable localization of singers and solo instruments even off the sweet spot. Additionally, it creates an impressive feeling of envelopment using the ambience sounds already present in the stereo source.“MP3 SX analyzes the existing natural ambience of the stereo material and plays it back through the rear channels. The sound sources remain in the front channels, but are played back through the Left, Center and Right channel, providing a stable front image even for off-sweet-spot listening.”
MP3 SX is demo software (download it here) that can convert existing stereo MP3 files into MP3 Surround. Stereo PCM files (e.g. in a .wav file) are not supported with this version of the software.
To play back MP3 Stereo eXtended files, a MP3 Surround Player or Decoder of Version 2.0 or newer is required. As MP3 Surround (and therefore also MP3 SX) is backwards compatible to MP3 Stereo, the files can be played back with any MP3 Stereo Player like Winamp: In this case without the benefits of the multi channel reproduction.
Supported MP3 Stereo input file formats:
- MP3 bitstream
- Stereo
- 44100 Hz sampling rate
- 128 Kbps - 192 Kbps CBR
- Medium to high quality VBR
