One major disadvantage of Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), the top-rated free anti-virus/anti-spyware program for Windows, is that it uses Windows Update to update the virus definition files. If you disabled the Windows update for some reasons MSE won’t update anymore.
Since MSE virus definitions are updated almost daily, the manually updating is quite tiresome. To solve this situation here is a freeware utility called MSE Update Utility which can be used to update MSE even if Windows Update is disabled.
After installing the tool, from the main window you can select the update intervals - Daily, Weekly, Monthly, or Startup.

Updating the virus definitions during startup is the best way to keep the system secure. It will automatically update the definitions and notify you when they are complete.
