Enhance Keyboard Shortcuts of YouTube Video Player (Chrome Extension)

YouTube already has basic keyboard shortcuts for controlling video playback, but they will work only when you watch the clips in full screen mode or video player is in focus (was clicked), which is often not the case. Here is how to make keyboard shortcuts always work as long as you are on the video details page and add couple of extra shortcuts with ‘YouTube Player Keyboard Controls’ Chrome extension.

YouTube Player Keyboard Controls is a handy extension for Chrome that allows you to enhance the keyboard control of the YouTube video player. You can use it to change the volume level, fast forward and rewind the video, and pause the player.

Below are YouTube Player shortcuts and its functions:
  •  Spacebar - Use it to Pause/Unpause video.
  •  Left/Right arrows – Use it to Fast forward/Rewind video (skips 5 seconds).
  •  Up/Down arrows or Plus/Minus on Numpad - Use it to increase/decrease volume by 10%.
  •  Asterisk on numpad – Use it to mute/unmute sound.
All shortcuts work on both flash player and HTML5 players. Numpad shortcuts aren’t available if flash player is in focus and default browser actions for spacebar and arrow keys (page scrolling) are disabled on video pages.

YouTube Player Keyboard Controls Chrome extension can be downloaded from Chrome Web Store.

Internet Explorer: Go to Tools - Internet options - Security tab - Custom Level button - Miscellaneous category - set "Allow Meta refresh" to Disable. Firefox: Go to Tools - Options - Advanced - General - Accessibility and tick the option next to ‘Warn me when web sites try to redirect or reload the page’. Alternatively you can use extension RefreshBlocker . Opera: Go to Preferences - Advanced - Network and uncheck "Enable automatic redirection".
